Superbowl 2009

Whether you’re rooting for the Steerlers or cheering for the Cardinals, you’re going to need to know what kind of things to stock up on, munch on and get your drink on with! Did you know that the Superbowl is the second largest food consuming time after Thanksgiving? It’s just been one month into your “new you” look and the Superbowl is ready to sabbatoge it. Hopefully, She and He will give you some insight for a “healthier” Superbowl that is just as fun as ever!

It is the Superbowl so there are essentials…. chips, pizza, beer?! For the chip department, purchase baked chips, not fried. Blue chips are really good too. Get hummus and pita bread – I personally find this more delicious then chips. Instead of ordering from Pizza Hut, why not have your friends over for a pizza party for a pre-game party? This will definately save you some calories, grease and help you to avoid eating bad tasting pizza. Bean Dip is an essential, am I correct? Find a healthier recipe for your bean dip this years party. Why consume the unneccesary stuff?! As for beer… Everyone has their drink of choice, but if you really want too shave off some calories, there are some lower carb and calorie beers out there like Sam Adams Light, Miller Light (MGD), Michelob Ultra…. Loving that Chilli? Try a vegan or just plain bean vegetarian chilli so so good! Veggie platter.. can’t go wrong there. It also doesn’t hurt to put out a salad. Of course it depends what kind of crowd you’re serving too. Are you a group of college students? Are you having a few buddies over? Or do you have the money to slurge? It’s all up too you.

Two cool ideas I read on foodnetwork site is putting chili in those small biscuit bowls and Teriyaki Chicken Wings. These dishes are easy and quick to make. And I’m going to assume taste waaaay better than the chicken wings you plan on ordering with that large Meat Lover’s pizza from Pizza Hut. Since chicken wings are a big hit, you can make different sauces and dips. Sweet and sour, BBQ, and ranch dip come to mind (don’t make fried chicke wings). Another cool idea – sliders.. but for all. You can make a few of each using chicken, beef, fish and veggie patties. This will cover everyone’s taste bites! Instead of sandwiches, little roll ups and wheat wraps (not white) with the good veggies, is a nice idea.

Okay, so if you like to cook and you have the funds to buy the good stuff here a few ideas that you may like:

  • Roasted Eggplant and Feta Dip (from eatingwell.com)
  • Tomato and Green Olive Salsa (from eatingwell.com)
  • Antipasto Platter
  • Sun Dried Tomato and Pesto Bruchetta, or any combo
  • Dates with Celery and Blue cheese (I love this. SUPER easy. Cut a date in half, take out the pit, and place a small piece of cheese with a sliver of celery for cruch!)
  • DIY trail mix… consisting of pretzels, peanuts, almonds, the little spicy things, mini m&m’s… anything you feel!

Little appetizers are always fun, just remember how much food you’re putting out on the table! Mindless eating and snacking during the game is when unwanted calories emerge. So set a time to grab a snack, drink or meal and then hop, jump, skip your way around as you cheer for your team!

You could just stick to a menu. Simple and easy. A few apps in the beginning and pizzas and salad during half time!

I’ll continually update this post until the Superbowl, with food ideas, sports bars, etc…

How ever you do it, make sure you party it up during this Superbowl!

Have your say!
